Frequently Asked Questions
Who do you work with and in what subjects?
My specialty is in foundational literacy for students in kindergarten through 3rd grade, or students in upper elementary with gaps in early literacy skills. I also work with students up to 6th grade in spelling, vocabulary, and comprehension and students through 8th grade in writing skills.
I want to get my child started in tutoring…what happens next?
Our first session will be an assessment session and is 60 minutes, even if your future sessions will be shorter. In this first session I will assess a wide range of literacy-related skills including phonological awareness, decoding and encoding, comprehension, vocabulary, rapid naming, and working memory. I then put together a comprehensive overview so that you understand exactly where your child’s strengths and areas of growth lie. Based on these results, your schedule, and your budget, we’ll work together to build a plan moving forward that feels comfortable and productive for everyone.
What methodologies do you use?
I follow the most current Science of Reading research and best practices. This includes instruction and practice in phonological awareness, explicit and systematic phonics instruction, work in morphology and vocabulary, and knowledge-based comprehension practice. My approach is multisensory and flexible to support students with disabilities and neurodivergences. I use manipulatives, play games, and use a variety of resources based on your child’s unique needs. Some of the programs I use often include Recipe for Reading, UFLI, SPIRE, Fundations/Wilson Reading System, and IMSE Orton-Gillingham.
What does it cost?
Your first consult is free- we meet for 30 minutes to discuss your concerns and see if I’m a good fit for your family. The next step is a 60 minute assessment session, the fee for which is $90. This is higher than my typical rate due to the extra time spent following the session to compile your results and also includes a 15 minute follow up call to discuss your child’s tutoring plan.
Once we get started with tutoring, my hourly rate is $75. Sessions are charged at this rate regardless of length (ie. 30 minute session is $37.50, 45 minute session is $56.25). I offer a 15% discount for families enrolling multiple children.
Where do sessions take place?
Sessions may be held virtually or in person at a local library. Specific library locations vary based on need and availability. We will discuss the options that work best for you.
My child has an IEP. Can you help with that?
Absolutely! I am passionate about making sure students get what they deserve from public schools. I can offer suggestions for IEP accommodations, help you understand overly-complex paperwork, and even attend IEP meetings if you desire.
Do you test for dyslexia?
I am not qualified to diagnose disabilities. I can screen your child for dyslexia and provide resources for diagnosis and support if a disability is suspected.
